The CrossFit Hackney Training Ethos – (part 4)

Posted 25th September 2014 by Josh Schouten

When you biff (kiwi word apparently) a stone into a lake, the initial impact will cause large ripples.  Over time these ripples will subside and calm will be restored.  So shit just got real at CrossFit Hackney and the new levels may have caused some ripples.   Guess what? You can no longer escape your weaknesses!

To be honest, everyone seems to have embraced the changes and started to pay more attention to the quality of their movements.  Roughly 80% of our current membership falls into the FUNCTIONAL level, a small percentages are in SPORT, and at this stage nobody (including coaches) can hit the PERFORMANCE targets.

The levels have required a lot of thought and we are aiming to build a solid foundation of strength and skill at all levels.  Structural balance in all aspects of the skill requirements will make stronger and fitter athletes and limit the chance of injury.

It’s in your best interest to improve on your weakness

The levels are designed to help motivate everyone to practice what they suck at.  There will be some testing day in the programming ahead, and the new levels are here to help us, the coaches,  design the CrossFit Hackney training programme.   With the introduction of the levels we will also be introducing a new class, CrossFit Engineering.  These classes will be designed to help members turn their weaknessses into their strength.

To be honest, our members know their abilities and are capable of making the right choice on the movements they should be performing.  You will notice that the programming includes some “pre-WOD tests” that allow members to gage if they should perform a certain movement in the WOD.  Its awesome to see members making educated decisions on the weights and movements they should be using.

The “Workout Of Death” (WOD) is a race against the clock and the time where movement quality really matters.  WOD time is never the time to learn or practice a movement that you are not fully competent with (see part 2).  The objective of the WOD is to keep moving by doing movements that are both safe and effective.  The CrossFit Hackney WOD’s are designed to challenge members of all levels with appropriate weights and movements.

Anything else is your ego talking, not quality!

After receiving your feedback in trial month, we have made some changes to the levels; please download the lasted version from the CrossFit Hackney Training Page.  Any feedback is welcome =)
