Hand Balancing and Muscle-Up Workshop

Posted 21st January 2016 by Josh Schouten

Who wouldn’t want to be able to do a single arm handstand?

Who loves Muscle-ups?

Most of us would be over the moon if we could do a two handed handstand.  Calisthenics and handstands are all the crazy at the moment, fitness fans cannot escape the flood of social media selfies of amazing athletes performing handstands, levers, muscle-ups, and other incredible body weight movements.  Not to mention the balance, agility, coordination and mental focus that is needed for this style of training.

Warming up the whole body based on flexibility, mobility, and strength. This section focuses heavily on shoulders and wrists.

Handstand Progression:

Helping to build each students’ confidence in standing upside down. By demonstrating and reinforcing confidence from the very start, I help encourage each individuals progress until they are able to jump into a free handstand.

Miguel will be teaching techniques such as;

– The thress jumps to Handstand (straddle, tuck and pike)

– The seven position

– Press to Handstand (straddle, tuck, pike and stalder)

– The Three Head Positions

– Mexican Shape

– One Arm Handstand, Handstand blocks games and exercises.

– The Figa/Gufus This, of course, depends on each individual’s skill.

– Side flexions(or flag), include one arm press entry to handstand.

An outline of my unique core strengthening exercise sequence 🙂

Core Training:

Migael’s unique core strengthening exercise sequence. This section is devoted to getting the most out of a 15 minutes strenuous core stabilisation method.  Migael teaches the importance of using the entire body in hand balance. The core is the base and power of the body, therefore maintaining a well conditioned core is essential in achieving a stable handstand.

Wrapping Up:

This is the opportunity for final questions. At the end of each training I normally find myself demonstrating and reemphasising certain sections of the previous teachings. This is where I make sure that each and every student leaves feeling confident and secure with their individual practice. I expect my students to leave empowered and ready to take their practice to the next level on their own. Confidence is key.

Miguel Sant’ana

Brazilian native Miguel Sant’ana moved to Auckland-New Zealand in 2010. His acrobatics journey started here joining a capoeira group in Auckland. In the same year he joined Tristar Gymnastics where the passion for tumbling and acrobatics started with the help of David Bishop (NZ elite gymnastics).

The sport of Capoeira has taken Miguel all around New Zealand to train and perform. In 2011 Miguel went to a capoeira event in Wellington where he met a circus professional that introduced him to the world of hand balance. Back in Auckland Miguel started training at hand balancing everyday, on the wall at home, inspired by circus artists, where he would scrutinise videos and have Skype meeting with overseas professionals to find the technique and the strength that he needs to be in this profession.

In 2012 Miguel travelled back to Brazil to train with capoeira Master Bamba and professional tumblers (world performers) on the beaches of Salvador-BA. adding to his knowledge in these fields. Talking these new skills back to NZ Miguel carried on with a stronger understanding and passion for his hand balancing training. In 2013 Miguel was chosen out of many as a finalist for the first New Zealand “The Golden Carnie Circus Awards’ where he performed with the top NZ circus artists at the Wellington Opera House.

Muscle-up Progressions:

The key aspects of the muscle-up include:

– the correct grip

– pulling technique and strength – strengthening techniques

– breathing techniques to help make the movement more efficient

– progressions and regressions for all levels

We will spend time working on both the bar and ring muscle-ups.
