Under the Momentum Spotlight: November

Posted 26th November 2013 by Josh Schouten

Welcome to the Monthly Momentum Spotlight.  Each month we plan to pick one male and one female member to answer some questions about their thoughts and feedback on the Momentum experience.  This month Neil Hanford and Roz Edwards have been put under the spotlight.  Here is what they has to day:

Momentum Spotlight: Neil Hanford

1. How long have you been training with Momentum?

“Since opening weekend”

2. After you found Momentum, what personal changes have you noticed?

“Strength has increased greatly especially my squat. Also, while I have no 6-pack all my clothes are definitely loser round the stomach area.”

3. What has been the most challenging aspect of training with Momentum?

All who know me will know its GYMNASTICS!

4. What are three useful tips you have learn’t from Momentum?

“Tip 1: Seeing the knowledge the trainers have has encouraged me to learn more and I have been reading a lot from various sources to help me achieve my goals.

Tip 2: To think about my position all the bloody time! Every exercise you should be thinking about form, muscle tension etc… Never realised how important it was.

Tip 3: Put my equipment away! I hate burpees!”

5. If quizzed about the Momentum experience what would be 3-4 things you would say?

“1: top coaches who don’t talk science talk! They speak in your own language so you can understand what needs to be done

2: wide variety of classes a definite plus (strongman class next yeah?)

3: community…members are all very friendly and makes for a great atmosphere (more social nights please)

4: hardcore workouts!”

Momentum Spotlight: Roz Edwards

1. How long have you been training with Momentum?

            Since August”

2. After you found Momentum, what personal changes have you noticed?

“My overall fitness increased, my speed for interval running increased, small things like running up stairs feels easy. I’m starting to be able to activate and control muscles I have never really been aware of before My build on my arms and shoulders has changed; developing shoulder muscles and stronger arms, less skinny runner look. I’m not sure what I think of this, I figure give it 6 months and see, everything is reversible.”

3. What has been the most challenging aspect of training with Momentum?

“Learning the technique for the weightlifting. It can feel frustrating, occasionally I can come away from CrossFit feeling I haven’t worked out that hard as you need to master the technique first. Of course it takes time and practice. I find doing a Met-con class once a week gives me a good balance.”

4. What are three useful tips you have learn’t from Momentum?

“Tip 1” How to do burpee’s efficiently; from standing up dropping your chest straight to the floor in one smooth movement rather than doing a press-up.

Tip 2: To improve grip strength after training hold a weight each side with your arms straight for as long as you can grip it, repeat.

Tip 3: For weightlifting moves squeeze your butt and keep your core tight.”

5. If quizzed about the Momentum experience what would be 3-4 things you would say?

“1: It’s awesome. I’ve enjoyed regularly exercising for years but it hasn’t come close to the buzz I get from a session at Momentum. I went before work the other day and my boss actually asked me if I had been out the night before because I was in such a good mood.

2: The coaches are brilliant. I was really upset about my recent hip injury (from running not Momentum training!), which means no running or jumping for the time being. I thought I wouldn’t be able to exercise (well, not anything I enjoy). The coaches have made the injury no issue at all, giving me alternative exercises so I can train just as hard in the sessions. StreTch did some structural balance tests with me and gave me a program to address my weaknesses. I had never expected to have this support. It’s the second running injury I’ve had (last one took two years), I think this time thanks StreTch’s advise I will not just recover but be stronger and have reduced the chances of future injuries.

3: The members are friendly and welcoming.”
