Goal setting is a way of direction

Posted 20th February 2014 by Josh Schouten

We have heard what StreTch and Tom think about setting goals, now it’s time to get some words of wisdom from Josh (hard to believe I know).

I look back on a life that is not too old but not too young either. Not as old as Geoff but never the less experiences that may seem eccentric. These include walking through Spain (900km), Running Ultra Marathons, Moving Countries to owning my own gym. Why you may ask? Why not is my answer!

All of these life challenges require one form or another of goal setting. It may seem menial in the beginning but goal setting as a way of direction. Either way you look at it you need goals and ambition in life. We all secretly want to achieve something bigger and better in the world. Some admit it, some don’t. The sooner you do and share this with someone the closer you are to achieving this. Taking the step of telling someone in whom you trust and will hold you accountable. We can say anything to anyone but this doesn’t mean we will achieve it.

Goals are always evolving and can change. This is one of the best things about goal setting. Over time I have always set goals and remember them distinctly. I always ask myself the following question: What do you really want? II have learnt to become more honest with myself and realise that goals WILL change and there is nothing wrong with that.

Be honest with yourself, look at what’s achievable. Don’t take this lightly because it might be that when you break it down and look at your goal, you’re not willing to put in what it takes to get there. This is reality. It is what it is.

But if you are up for it, believing something is possible and gunning for it is all you need. Surround yourself with likeminded people that have a common goal to be “better”. Momentum Training is exactly this. We provide coaches and staff and a community that are there to help you at being “Better”. At Momentum we know successful people all have work ethic. Working hard is not negotiable at Momentum. Some days will be easier than others but working hard will allow you to more successful at life. This doesn’t mean more salary, more holidays, more possessions. Look at happiness. Happiness will be more of a success to me. I don’t see the point in having a bursting bank account but being grumpy as fuck the rest of the time because you are not happy with yourself. Now its time to be honest with yourself.

Set the measures of success. How will you know if you are better. What will you be going by. I’m not talking about the cars parked in the garage. I’m talking would you have the confidence to walk out the front door in a tight pair of shorts. Hell I know I have many a time. Maybe I have received a few odd looks here and there. But I’m happy with this. I’m doing what I want to do and I’m happy doing it.

What’s really important in life? Now this is a tricky one. We all want so much yet never have enough. Maybe those tight shorts just aren’t for you. Lets reassess.

Making a short term goals to hit the big time is a must. Tom cruise wasn’t the star in Top Gun without staring out in Endless Love. Use short term goals as stepping stones to the podium. Some podiums will have more steps some are hard to climb. you may fall. Jump back on, in the end you will get there. Don’t you forget this.

I know many a goals of mine have changed in recent times but having the guys at Momentum pushing me to “better” is never going to stop. My goal of bettering their CrossFit workout time is one thing that I don’t see changing in the near future.

Now over to you…What do you really want to achieve?
