Considering signing up to a CrossFit gym?

You’re considering signing up to a CrossFit gym and you’re a little nervous… Join the club!  Many of you may have heard or seen the amazing results that CrossFit can deliver.  Many of you have the desire to start a journey to improve your health and fitness, however this desire can be overshadowed by the fear of stepping into what is commonly perceived as an intimidating environment. TearsAndCuddlesConstantly hearing about how CrossFit is an intense and demanding fitness regimen containing a mix of Gymnastics, Olympic lifting and Power Lifting can scare many people away before they even GIVE IT A TRY.

At Momentum Training we understand how going into a new gym setting, surrounded by barbells, wall balls, kettle-bells, gymnastics rings, weight plates, and athletic men and women dressed to the nine’s in CrossFit attire can be very intimidating. How on earth does anyone new ever fit in and reach this level of fitness? The team at Momentum Training have thought long and hard about the most effective way to introduce new members to the wonderful world of Momentum Training and CrossFit Hackney. We have listened to feedback from members who have come in and done a trial class, foundations members, and the current members who have been through the “newbie” journey. We understand the intimidation factor and the need to LEARN, DEVELOP and PROGRESS gradually into the classes and the community.

Why all CrossFit Boxes are not the same?

Firstly it’s worth noting that CrossFit is not a franchise, and every CrossFit box (CrossFit lingo meaning CrossFit gym) can be very different in terms of how they operate.  The overall vibe, personality, and quality of each CrossFit box will be unique and should be considered when choosing which one to join.  It’s also worth knowing that Momentum Training offers more than just CrossFit classes, and not all of our members CrossFit.

Our coaches have over 30 years of combined experience in strength and conditioning and we measure profit as the achievements of our members, both to their fitness and overall quality of life.

We understand the intimidation factor of CrossFit to new members and we have worked hard to design a 3-month foundations membership to help new members get up to speed.

CrossFit Athletes are machines, I’m not sure I want to train like this?

Another key fact to be aware of is that “CrossFit the Sport” and “CrossFit for Health and Fitness” are two very different things at Momentum Training.  Many people see the elite athletes competing in the CrossFit Games performing insane workouts and looking like machines.  These athletes are professional CrossFitters and just like any other professional athlete they spend hours in the gym training to compete at this high level.  CrossFit for health and fitness does not require us to train like machines, nor to look anything like these athletes, so please don’t be intimidated by the sport of CrossFit.

CrossFit for health and fitness is truly for everyone.

No matter how fit you are, no matter how strong you are, no matter how overweight you are and no matter how long you’ve been sitting on the couch for, Momentum Training has a fitness program designed to help you achieve your goals. CrossFit communities all over the world are working hard to educate those people who want to better themselves through “CrossFit for health and fitness.” Starting out as a beginner is often a very humbling experience; even the fittest CrossFitters remember how humbling it was when they first stepped into a CrossFit box. Don’t be scared, CrossFit isn’t just for elite athletes; it’s also for ordinary people who want to improve their health and fitness. community1 Yes, there will be members at the box who have been doing CrossFit for years who can do pull-ups, push-ups, and lift what looks like more weight than you ever thought possible, but there are also people at the gym who are new, and in the same new shoes as you.  Everything in CrossFit can AND will be modified to your individual level of strength and fitness.

As your skills and strength develop, you will be able to do more and you will quickly see the progress of your hard work.  The first 6-months of training at Momentum Training is the most important time to learn and master the movements and build your confidence. At Momentum Training fitness is an integral part of everyday life. What’s with this CrossFit Community?

The community is by far one of the biggest factors in overcoming your fear, it is also one of the main reasons why people love training at Momentum Training. Everyone understands what it is like to be the “newbie,” and it’s always rewarding to see the more experienced members supporting and encouraging everyone who takes part in our classes. You need to immerse yourself into an environment that is going to motivate you and support you.  An environment that will make you physically and mentally stronger, and an environment that will make you fitter and confident to tackle anything life can throw at you. As both owners and coaches we work our butts off to make sure our members are constantly progressing, appropriately scaling workouts and weights to complete every workout efficiently and safely.  We take the time to design and coach multiple goal-based programmes in every single class.  We are confident that we have a program suited to all levels of fitness, including our CrossFit classes.

Where can you start?

We recommend jumping into a Free Trial of either our Metabolic Conditioning (Met-Con) class or our CrossFit Engineering class.  Momentum Training is very different from any other gym in London and we offer a HUGE variety of classes for different abilities and training goals.  These classes will introduce you to our way of training and to the community of friendly members and coaches. community2

A good way to be held accountable would be to bring a friend with you. It will be harder to back out last minute and you’ll have a buddy to share the experience with. If you make it through the intro class (joking), we believe you will be left feeling hungry for more.

If you feel that you are not yet ready to start participating in CrossFit classes we offer a Met-Con only membership that allows you access to the Momentum Training Met-Con classes.  At a latter date, when you feel ready to progress into CrossFit classes you can purchase a Momentum Training Foundations Membership.
