Mobility class – March

Posted 3rd March 2020 by Anthony Masters

Hi everyone,

This is a short one, for the next 1 – 2 months of the mobility programming i am going to be making the first half upper body focused, particularly addressing the neck & scapular (shoulder blades). The idea is to have a specific and consistent stimulus to see some more progress, especially for the regulars that make it to class. The other reason is to serve as an active mobility cool down for the 6am gymnastics group and a warm up for the 8am gymnastics group to help see some more long term progress in the gymnastic classes.

So why neck and shoulder blades? This is to tackle what I feel most are lacking in terms of mobility and strength when it comes to upper body movements. The shoulder blade is a key player in shoulder health, the better that can move the better all upper body pushing and pulling movements will be to execute such as muscle ups, pull ups, dips, overhead presses, handstands, Olympic lifting and so on. Really it is a game changer.

Having said that the 2nd half of the class will be lower body focused to add some variety. As usual the last Thursday of the month will be spine focused.

On a side note if you want a more personal approach to your mobility training speak to me regarding an assessment, this way i can address what your priorities are in relation to your goals and provide a program to support it. For more info on this speak to me in person or email: [email protected]

The itinerary is as follows:

Wk 1 – Neck, scapular protraction/ retraction, hip adductors (this will help with lower body movements like the squat and also reduce any lower back niggles)

Wk 2 – Neck, scapular protraction/ retraction, hip external rotation (again this will help with lower body movements like the squat/ deadlift and also reduce any lower back niggles)

Wk 3 – Neck, scapular protraction/ retraction, hip flexion (and again this will help with lower body movements like the squat/ deadlift and also reduce any lower back niggles)

Wk 4 – spine focused
